Mrs Linda Hurley

Ambassador

Linda Hurley (nee McMartin) was born and raised in Sydney. She was educated at Kingsgrove High School in Sydney and completed her teaching training in 1975. She commenced teaching at Tempe in 1976.

In March 1977, Linda married David Hurley and in the course of their married life has accompanied him on a wide variety of military postings in Australia and overseas, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Malaysia.

Linda took a long break from teaching to raise her three children. She resumed her teaching career in 1998 and has taught in the public and private school systems for the last 13 years. Linda retired from full time teaching in July 2011. She continues to sing with primary aged children through the Australian National University School of Music outreach singing program. Linda is a Pastoral Carer at the Canberra Hospital and assists with Meals on Wheels. She is patron of the Solid Rock Christian ministry to women in Defence, sings in the St Andrew's Presbyterian Church Choir and plays Bridge. She has recently become the patron for the Defence Community Organisation and the Australian Military Wives Choir. Linda keeps herself fit by walking, hoola-hooping and regular Pilates sessions.

Linda and David have three children: Caitlin (28), Marcus (26) and Amelia (22). The girls study and work in Sydney and Marcus is studying and working in Canberra. The family pet dog 'Rugby' is the senior member of the family.

Defence Force families experience a unique way of life that is both rewarding and challenging. AFOM aims to develop a clearer understanding of what these challenges are and to assist Defence families to develop the necessary resilience to be adaptable and play their part as members of the Defence family.
